DESCRIPTION:Black Love Day (BLD)\n 31st Year –  Black Love Day\, Feb. 13\, 2024\n\nAAHA’s theme in 2024 for the 30th Anniversary of Black Love Day is “Black Love Heals 365.” This\nmessage encourages communities of color\, especially\, but all communities\, to use the higher vibration of\nlove as a mental health solution to help us heal the disconnection so many feel; to help us reconcile our\ndifferences for better relationships and to use its healing value of creating inner peace which fosters greater\nresilience in these turbulent times.\nAyo Handy-Kendi\, 64\, is the founder of the African American Holiday Association\, a non-profit that seeks to preserve black culture through tradition and ritual. Handy-Kendi\, who also goes by Mama Ayo\, created Black Love Day in 1993 as an alternative holiday for black people to celebrate and love one another at a time of year when love is already in the air. \nBlack Love Day has risen to prominence  in recent years\, the holiday has become a popular hashtag affirming many forms of black love on Twitter and Instagram #BLD. \nThe celebrations have now expanded to include white people to “show love in action on Black Love Day\,” thanks to a suggestion made by Handy-Kendi’s significant other. This inclusivity was needed so that both\, the blacks and the whites\, could heal their relationships and return to love. This necessitated that the whites examine their white privilege and racial attitudes. Rosa Parks Day 2024 falls on a Sunday. \nRosa Parks Day is an American observance to honor civil rights activist Rosa Parks\, who was known for refusing to give up her seat on a bus. \nRosa Parks Day promotes equal opportunities\, civil rights\, and fairness across all communities. \nOver the years\, the Rosa Parks bus has become a symbol of the fight for equal rights. It has been fully restored and is now displayed in the Henry Ford Museum. Rosa Parks’ Day\, on February 4\, is also known as the Day of Courage. \n  \nWho Was Rosa Parks?\nRosa Parks was an African-American woman who played a pivotal role in shaping the history of the United States of America. She is famously known as the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement” for her brave and defiant act of refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery bus in 1955. She was arrested due to her act of civil disobedience\, which in turn ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott\, a 381-day-long protest against the unjust segregation laws that ruled public transportation in the city. \nThe Montgomery Bus Boycott was a significant turning point in the Civil Rights Movement and ultimately led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 1956 that declared racial segregation on public buses unconstitutional. Rosa Parks’ actions and her unwavering commitment to justice catalyzed change\, inspiring a generation of activists to join the fight against racial discrimination and injustice. \nDespite facing personal challenges and backlash from those who opposed her activism\, Parks remained steadfast in her commitment to social justice and became a symbol of courage\, resilience\, and determination. She continued to work actively in the Civil Rights Movement\, serving as an inspiration and role model to many. DESCRIPTION:Haiti Independence Day\nHaiti Independence Day is celebrated annually on January 1. This day was set aside to commemorate Haiti’s declaration of independence from French colonial rule on January 1\, 1804. The declaration of independence had been preceded by many years of a slave revolt called the Haitian Revolution. It started on August 21\, 1791\, and lasted until independence was declared. Formerly called ‘Saint Domingue\,’ Haiti was one of the most profitable French colonies with rich sugar and coffee plantations worked by African bondsmen subjected to harsh treatment\, overwork\, lack of proper medical care\, inadequate food\, clothing\, and shelter. \nHaiti proclaimed independence from the French colonial authorities on January 1\, 1804. ‘Haiti\,’ which in Taino means ‘country of mountains\,’ was renamed under the direction of Jean-Jacques Dessalines from Saint Domingue.
